Distortion Energy Static Failure Criterion; Von Mises Stress
LECTURE 12: Here the Distortion Energy (DE) static failure criterion is developed and compared with the maximum shearing stress criterion. Concepts of hydrostatic and distortion strain are explored and explained. The elliptical failure locus associated with the DE criterion is shown and the DE estimation of yielding strength in shear is developed. An example is presented that demonstrates the process of using MSS and DE theories to find factors of safety for a part that experiences multiaxial plane stress at its critical point resulting from a single applied load. The load line associated with this applied load is plotted and the relationship between the applied load and the length of the load line is explored. The geometry the load line and the failure loci are related to the factors of safety for this example.
