Peer to Peer: What's in a Name: Macedonia and Greece name dispute/deadlock

With the fall of Yugoslavia in the early 1990's, a name dispute erupted between the Macedonia and Greece, which continues today. The country was accepted into the United Nations under the temporary name of The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and will remain as such until this dispute is resolved. There has been no significant progress in two decades. Makedonka Trajkovska, EMPA Candidate and native of the Republic of Macedonia, will look at this complex and widely impactful situation: the history, negotiations, its desired integration into the EU and NATO and the effects on the Republic of Macedonia. She'll also offer recommendations and conclusions for policy actions for resolve this dispute. About the speaker: Makedonka Trajkovska Ivanova joins the EMPA program with a focus in women advancement, leadership of international organizations, and development. She hopes to create solutions to improve the gender equality in Macedonia by addressing issues like the political participation of women, economic empowerment, and reproductive health and education.
