In this video, we explore how black holes are born from the deaths of massive stars. When a star many times larger than our Sun runs out of fuel, its core collapses under its own gravity, triggering a supernova explosion and, in some cases, leaving behind a black hole. We examine the different types of black holes, from stellar-mass black holes to the supermassive giants that sit at the centers of galaxies, including the one at the heart of our own Milky Way. One of the biggest surprises in modern astronomy is the discovery of water in the environments surrounding black holes. Scientists have detected enormous clouds of water vapor near active supermassive black holes, containing trillions of times more water than all the oceans on Earth combined.
