ZOO Liberec

Liberec Zoo is the oldest zoological garden in the Czech Republic—join us for an adventurous yet relaxing walk through its picturesque grounds. In 4K you’ll see more than 170 species from around the world, from majestic giraffes with a calf, elephants, camels, lions and tigers to charming penguins and many other fascinating residents, all accompanied by gentle music. The zoo was founded in 1904 by the Ornithological Society for North Bohemia, but its roots go back to 1895 when the first bird park opened at Perštýn. In 1907 the famous Čapí hnízdo cottage from the German‑Czech Exhibition was moved to the grounds and became the center of the zoo, which gradually grew to include flamingos, primates, seals, alligators, various hoofed animals and predators. Development stalled during World War I, but after 1923 under Erich Sluwa the zoo blossomed again and expanded its exhibits. After a difficult postwar period, the zoo refocused under director Jiří Badalec from 1954 on breeding endangered species and modernizing the site. In the 1990s Liberec Zoo gained worldwide recognition for breeding white tigers. Today it is home to over 170 species, more than half of which participate in European conservation programs—enjoy an inspiring walk through this historic yet modern zoological gem.
