Ulwaluko & Umgidi in Xhosa Culture: Tradition, Celebration & the Alcohol Controversy

In this video, we explore Ulwaluko, the deeply rooted Xhosa rite of passage in South Africa that marks a boy’s transition into manhood. This sacred cultural institution encompasses teachings of discipline, respect, responsibility, and communal identity, and culminates in the celebratory umgidi when initiates return to their families and communities. But there’s growing debate — not just about the ritual itself, but the impact of commercial alcohol branding and consumption during these celebrations. Critics argue that alcohol, particularly heavily marketed commercial brands, contradicts the values of self-control and respect that Ulwaluko seeks to instill, and that it risks distorting cultural norms and even endangering lives when mixed with traditional rites. We speak to Sibongiseni Peacock, Innovation Manager at the DG Murray Trust, and Luvo Kasa, Social Work Lecturer at Walter Sisulu University, about how communities are responding to these issues, what it means for cultural identity, and how tradition and modern influences are intersecting.
