Why Mental Health Shapes Everything We Debate | Episode #1
In the first episode of In Focus, I sit down with Margaret Morse, director of community services for Seneca County, for a conversation that gets at a question I've been thinking about for years: How much do mental health and basic human needs influence the issues we debate every day in politics, economics, and public policy? Margaret was one of the first people in my career to challenge how I thought about community issues. More than a decade ago, while I was still a young reporter, she reminded me of something simple but profound: people can't focus on the bigger challenges we're trying to solve if their basic needs aren't being met. It's an idea rooted in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and it fundamentally changed how I think about housing, economic development, addiction, poverty, energy policy, and even political polarization. In this conversation, we discuss: • Mental health in rural communities • The challenges facing local governments and human service agencies • Housing, poverty, and economic development • How public policy and mental health intersect • Funding pressures and changing community needs • What the future could look like for counties like Seneca and others across New York When I started this column, Substack, and now this podcast, my goal was to create a place for thoughtful conversations about problems, solutions, and the future of our communities. There was no better way to begin than with this discussion. #MentalHealth #PublicPolicy #Housing #EconomicDevelopment #LocalGovernment #CommunityDevelopment #RuralAmerica #Podcast #InFocus
