Political Persecution Exposed: Mhlanga Confronts UK Parliament Over Zimbabwe Arrests
Zimbabwean journalist Blessed Mhlanga has addressed a parliamentary meeting at Westminster, delivering a deeply personal warning about press freedom, prolonged pretrial detention and Zimbabwe’s worsening constitutional crisis. Mhlanga accused the Zimbabwean government of practising “lawfare”—using arrests, denied bail and lengthy remand detention to punish critics before they have been convicted of any crime. Drawing from his own 73 days in prison, he explained how this system affected his family, income and law studies. He also discussed Constitutional Amendment No. 3, signed into law by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on 7 July 2026. The controversial changes extend presidential and parliamentary terms, move the expected 2028 elections to 2030 and transfer the election of the president from ordinary voters to Parliament. Mhlanga gave a particularly blunt assessment of Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, arguing that reported tensions inside ZANU-PF are mainly about succession—not necessarily democracy or human rights. In this Zimwaves TV commentary, we examine Mhlanga’s testimony, Britain’s response, the weakening of Zimbabwe’s institutions and whether international pressure can still make a difference.
