At twenty, he achieved the rank of Zhuangyuan — top scholar in the empire — with a ten-thousand-character essay that moved the emperor himself. When the Mongol army swept south in 1274, he sold his entire family estate to raise a volunteer army. He was captured, escaped, captured again. He crossed the Lingding Ocean in chains, writing: "Since ancient times, who has not died? Let me leave a loyal heart to shine in the annals of history." Kublai Khan offered him the chancellorship of the new empire. He refused. "The Song has fallen. I ask only for death." In a filthy underground cell in Dadu — the capital of the dynasty that had killed his empire — he wrote The Song of Righteousness: "There is a righteous breath in heaven and earth." On January 9, 1283, he was led to the execution ground. He asked which direction was south. He knelt, bowed toward his fallen homeland, and died at forty-seven. When the executioner searched his robes, he found his final words: "What is the purpose of studying the sages' books? From this day on, I have nothing to be ashamed of." 正氣歌 (Song of Righteousness) is not a song about victory.
