Sandiacre Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around six miles west, and slightly south, of Nottingham, is the town of Sandiacre. The town's name is believed to derive from Old English: 'sandig', meaning sandy, and 'æcer', meaning field or cultivated land. Geographically it is situated on the west bank of the River Erewash which forms part of Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border. In 1779 the Erewash Canal opened. This was used to transport coal from the Erewash Valley coalfields to the north. The canal passes through the centre of Sandiacre and links up to the River Trent via the Trent Lock, around four miles to the south. The town would also benefit from its location as it became a staging post on the turnpike road from Nottingham to Derby during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1847 Stapleford and Sandiacre railway station opened. Stapleford is the neighbouring town immediately to the east as part of a continuous settlement which straddles the counties of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The station was part of the Erewash Valley Line which linked up with the Midland Main Line to the south, and extended to Clay Cross to the north. In 1967 it succumbed to the Beeching cuts, where over 2,000 stations in Britain were closed in a controversial move to promote road travel. Today, public transport to Sandiacre consists of direct local bus services from Nottingham, Derby and other nearby settlements. In 1888 Springfield Mill was built. Seen just after the 4-minute mark, this was one of several lace factories which helped transform Sandiacre from a small village into an industrial town. The last lace factory here closed during the 1990s. Springfield Mill has since been converted into apartments. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
