In condemnation of the apartheid regime in the country, the United Nations had imposed a boycott on South Africa (which included Sun City), trying to prevent bands to support the regime by playing long residencies in Sun City. As a lot of money was offered to acts in order to convince them of ignoring the boycott, several bands and musicians gave in and played there anyway, earning them public criticism, fines and an inclusion on the UN's blacklist. Unfortunately, one of these bands was Queen. Officially stating that they were "an unpolitical band" and would "play for anyone who wanted to see them", the band at least tried to ensure they were playing to mixed audiences, giving away free tickets to the black community. In the end, this plan wouldn't work out as well as intended and the band received lots of backlash, making at least some of the band members regret this somewhat short-sighted decision. Almost like it was bad karma, Freddie faced severe vocal issues during the first few shows with one concert (on 7th October) even being ended early after just about 20 minutes! Freddie was given steroids afterwards to ensure the following shows would go ahead. This soundboard recording is from the penultimate show in Sun City and shows both Freddie and the band in fantastic shape, giving one of the best performances of the entire year and tour. Unfortunately, it"s missing the solo spots and with no other recordings or sources existing, it is currently unknown if "Stone Cold Crazy", "Great King Rat" and the keyboard solo were still performed in Sun City. Rub was so kind to finally remaster this soundboard to take it to the next level soundwise and allowed me to upload it to my channel.
