Sarabande Emmanuelle Bertrand, cello *** Enregistrer les Six Suites de Bach représentait pour Emmanuelle Bertrand un rêve absolu ; il a pu se réaliser grâce à la rencontre de l’interprète avec un instrument d’exception. Conçu par Carlo Tononi à Venise, ce violoncelle de 1730 à la sonorité profonde et généreuse, monté “baroque” (avec cordes en boyau et archet à l’avenant), s’est révélé le plus fidèle des partenaires pour aborder – au propre comme au figuré – l’un des monuments les plus impressionnants de toute la musique occidentale. "On retrouve une certaine évidence dans la tonalité d’ut mineur de la Suite no5, avec la scordatura (abaissement de la corde de la au sol pour obtenir l’accord des cordes suivant : do, sol, ré, sol) qui permet de doubler le sol “à vide” et d’offrir une belle résonance avec la corde de do. Cet ut mineur n’a rien à voir avec le caractère introspectif de la Suite no2 : on assiste ici à une extériorisation pleine de colère. La Suite no5 est plus développée que les autres : elle présente une écriture fuguée rigoureuse, un Prélude en forme d’ouverture à la française, sévère, et au centre de la partition, la Sarabande – sommet de l’expression en si peu de notes !". - Emmanuelle Bertrand To record Bach’s Six Suites was Emmanuelle Bertrand’s most cherished dream; it has now become reality thanks to her encounter with an exceptional instrument. Built by Carlo Tononi in Venice in 1730, this cello with its deep and generous sound, set up in ‘Baroque’ style (with gut strings and bow to match), has proved to be the most faithful of partners for tackling one of the most impressive monuments in all western music. "We’re back to something more accessible with the key of C minor in Suite no.5; here the scordatura (in which the A string is tuned down to G, so that the strings are tuned to C, G, D, G) makes it possible to double the ‘open’ G and to offer a beautiful resonance with the C string. The key of C minor in this suite is completely different from the introspective character of Suite no.2: here we see something more extravert and full of anger. Suite no.5 is more developed than the others.
