The crates are cleaned and ready, the birds have completed 11 tosses out to 115km, and now the real test begins. This year our Federation heads west again — from 192km right through to the big distance races over 1000km, stretching from May until early October across 24 races. Once again the members voted for separate North & South releases, hoping it helps the birds lock onto the correct line home from these wide western routes. The Northside birds go first this week. I’ve decided to take a calculated gamble by sending a strong team of 30 racers plus 4 crates of trainers. It’s a risk, but with lighter numbers expected for the opening race, it’s a good chance to get the team educated early — especially the yearlings.
