Transportation and tourism: This is what the T stands for in the model designation of the Mercedes-Benz station wagon models manufactured in Bremen. With the W 123 series, the company opened up a whole new market segment at the end of the 1970s. Craftsmen and farmers, as well as the rich and famous of the time, suddenly had entirely new options for equipping their lucky star with a decent payload. Classic car expert Christian Steiger presents two examples from the two opposite ends of the performance spectrum: a 300 TD diesel model with 80 hp and the 280 TE, which was further enhanced by AMG, with its six-cylinder engine, also familiar from the SL, which produced up to 210 hp in the Affalterbach version.
