Opened in 1939, Holy Cross comprises 200 acres (81 ha). It contains—amongst others—the graves and tombs of showbusiness professionals. Many celebrities are in the sections near "The Grotto" in the southwest part of the cemetery. Established in 1939, Holy Cross Cemetery spans approximately 200 acres of rolling hills. It is operated by the Los Angeles Archdiocese and features lush gardens, ponds, marble religious statues, a mausoleum, and a chapel where daily Mass is celebrated. A unique policy at the cemetery stipulates the use of only flat grave markers, with no large monuments or vaults permitted in the ground burial sections. A significant feature is "The Grotto" section in the southwest area of the park, which was built by Japanese designer Ryozo F. Kado and is a popular spot for visitors and the burial location for many celebrities. Many prominent figures from the entertainment industry are interred at Holy Cross. Actors/Actresses: John Candy Bing Crosby Jimmy Durante Rita Hayworth Bela Lugosi Fred MacMurray Ricardo Montalbán Sharon Tate Loretta Young Ray Bolger (The Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz) Jack Haley (The Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz) Other Notable Individuals: Chick Hearn (sports broadcaster) John Ford (director) Spike Jones (musician/comedian) Louella Parsons (writer/columnist) A cemetery is a dedicated place for burying or entombing the dead, serving as a final resting spot with varying cultural, religious, and aesthetic expressions, from simple burial grounds to elaborate memorial parks with monuments, statues, and gardens for remembrance, reflection, and honoring legacies, often with specific rules for visitation and upkeep. Key aspects of cemeteries: Purpose: Final resting place for the deceased, offering space for grief and commemoration. Variations: Can be simple plots, grand landscapes, or even integrated with funeral services. Features: May include headstones, mausoleums, crypts, columbaria (for ashes), and memorial markers. Cultural Significance: Reflect different beliefs; some are holy sites, others festival locations (like in Mexico or Japan), while some (like Quaker burial grounds) emphasize simplicity.
