"Shabarimala & Spiritual Sadhana" Talk in English by Swami Aparajitananda, Chinmaya Mission Manglore

Hari Om! In this talk that is symbolic in more ways than one, Swami Aparajitananda tries to show the northward path to seekers on a day which symbolises Uttarāyana - sun's own northward journey. The spiritual journey of every seeker is explained in detail with the help of the symbolism in the customary journey to Shabarimala undertaken by scores of devotees every year during December - January. Many parallels are drawn from the teachings in Kathopanishad, Bhagavad Gītā, Upadesha Sāra and those derived from Rāmāyana and Purānas. Importance of Guru and sharanāgati is emphasized. Along with explaining the rituals and austerities observed for 41 days step by step to the smallest detail, Swamiji clarifies on the spiritual significance of each ritual. In the process, seekers across faiths get to listen to the precious essence of principles of Spiritual Sādhanā, which can be readily and practically applied in their own daily Sādhanā. It is also a wonderful way for devotees observing these austerities in order to visit Shabarimala to get back in touch with the intent and logic behind each of the rituals. Symbolism behind the story of Lord Ayyappā's birth and its purpose is explained and misconceptions arising from wrong interpretation of Scriptures are cleared. The seemingly controversial and much-debated question of why women are not allowed to undertake this pilgrimage to Shabarimala is put to rest by the power of pure logic and observation of human nature. In this journey from illusion to reality, from darkness to light, from mortality to immortality, the purpose of Sādhanā is to conquer the inner enemies (negativities of the mind) with the help of the Lord to realise the Lord within. This talks serves as an inspiration for all seekers to start walking and keep walking, not just this Makara Sankranti day and but each day of life, with the right understanding, right means and in the right direction towards the right goal so that our final offering to God is befitting.
