This solo trip takes me to Tamagawa Onsen, located just north of Nyuto Onsenkyo in Akita Prefecture. I'll be visiting the inn "Shin Tamagawa Onsen" within the hot springs to introduce its charms. This hot spring boasts a highly acidic pH of 1.2, primarily composed of hydrochloric acid, a rare mineral found in the world. Its low-radiation hormesis effect has garnered attention in the medical community, potentially promoting natural healing. Making the most of this natural power, the hot spring boasts the largest volume of water flowing from a single source in Japan. To maximize its benefits, the inn offers a large public bath with 14 different baths, as well as an open-air bath. The hot springs are uniquely stimulating, characterized by a tingling and itchy sensation. It was a truly invaluable experience! Both breakfast and dinner are buffet-style, featuring over 40 varieties of Akita local cuisine and seasonal delicacies designed with health and beauty in mind. Buses run infrequently, with the last bus arriving at 12:35, meaning I arrive about two hours earlier than check-in. However, they're open for lunch, and I can enjoy the hot springs before check-in, allowing me to spend the whole day relaxing at the inn. Another attractive feature is the extensive range of services available, including a training room, play equipment for playing in the snow, indoor bedrock bathing, and events held every evening. Tamagawa Onsen is closed for the winter (from November 30, 2025 to April 15, 2026), so I wasn't able to visit this time, but if you have the chance, I highly recommend going outside of winter and experiencing the natural bedrock bathing and hot spring water!
