When the approximately 50 residents of El Recuenco first heard their mayor's plan to bring a herd of European bison to the town, many greeted it with skepticism, and just as many with concern. "What worried people most was the issue of safety, how compatible or incompatible it might be with other activities in the mountains: 'I won't be able to go mushroom picking anymore, for example, or I won't be able to go cutting firewood.' Things like that," says Enrique Collada, the 29-year-old mayor of this town located in the Alto Tajo region of the province of Guadalajara.
