We also know about OPNsense, how to install it on a pc and setup VLANs. But we don’t know about much about how it’s primary purpose, securing our network with firewall rules. Well in this video, we get started with that, and cover the basics of firewall rules, and firewall rule creation. Firewall rules in OPNsense work like your standard port based rules. However, with plugins we can harness the power of Next Generation Firewalls, such as a Layer 7 Application based rules, allowing us to control application traffic, regardless of the port it’s running on. This falls in line with our general thinking of how we want to create policy, we want to control the traffic, not just the port. While both OPNsense and OpenWrt are firewalls and routers, there are also some notable differences, that make OPNsense my preferred firewall Operating System.
