Large Hollywood-style letters spell out the name Brașov on a mountaintop. The heart of the city is Piaţa Sfatului, an irregularly shaped pentagon, dominated by Casa Sfatului, the old town hall now a museum. The square is entirely surrounded by beautiful Baroque buildings. Not far away is the Biserica Neagră, the famous church with its distinctive dark color due to a great fire that virtually destroyed it in 1689. It is one of the largest Gothic churches in the Balkans and its construction lasted almost 100 years, starting in the late 1300s. The fortified citadel was inhabited by the Saxons, separated from the Romanian quarter called Schei. One of the first anti-government protests against Ceaușescu started in Brașov in 1987. We then took a pleasant stroll along Republicii Street, a pedestrian street that runs through the oldest part of the city. The street is now a charming succession of shops, boutiques, ice cream parlors, and restaurants.
