NZ’s Natural Hot Pools & Swing Bridges | Welcome Flat Hut, Copland Track | Backpacking South Island

Day 62: a few miles on to Welcome Flats Hut from Architect Creek Hut. The swing bridges were some of the longest and most thrilling for me yet (with my fear of heights and vertigo, but still a fun challenge!). The slippery rock and flooded track theme continued for this little section, but the reward of the natural hot springs at the end was so worth it. Three pools of differing temperatures. Beware the amoeba and don’t dunk your head or splash into faces. Lots of lovely mud to cover your sandfly bites. You’ll get muddy so consider bringing out a cup to help you rinse that stuff off as you get out. I saw people using the toilet sink water to wash off but I would recommend the cold stream near the hut instead to save that other water. Flush toilets, big kitchen, lots of rooms upstairs: the Welcome Flats Hut is super nice but seems to always be pretty crowded. A lot of the party crowd so expect loud noises late and early. It is what it is, I suppose. The location is so incredible, it’s worth the hut stay or camp out (though fair warning, the camping area looks like it stays wet and is prone to condensation).
