Gospel of the day Tuesday, June 16, 2026 Audio Gospel of the day in Italian with commentary by    / @frastefano   Liturgy of the Word today, from the Gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord Mt 5:43-48 At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brothers only, what more do you do? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You, therefore, be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Word of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ Violence spreads like wildfire. One gesture generates a response, one wound provokes another, and everything grows, multiplies. And then it comes naturally to think: the only way to stop it is with a greater force, with a stronger army, with someone who can assert himself and break this chain. It's the most logical, most immediate reasoning. Yet Jesus enters right there, within this logic, and overturns it with startling words: "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven." It's as if he were saying: violence is not stopped by a greater force of the same kind, but by a different force. Not with something that surpasses it in intensity, but with something that defuses it at the root. Because if I respond to evil with evil, even if I win, it was evil that won. Loving your enemy does not mean justifying evil, nor is it about being weak. It means choosing not to feed it. It means breaking that invisible chain that binds wounds to one another. It is a greater force, yes... because it is the strength of God. So perhaps the real question is: do I want to win or do I want evil to truly end? Because every time we choose not to return the evil we have received, every time we pray instead of closing in, we bless instead of hating... something truly changes. Certainly within us. And from there, slowly, around us too. Don't underestimate this. It's no small thing. It's the point where heaven touches earth. And today you too can start: just choose a different direction. Because love, true love, makes no noise... but it is the only force capable of truly extinguishing violence.
