In geology, shear zones are tabular zones in crustal domains where high deformation rates are concentrated, and they can occur in extensional, compressional, and strike-slip tectonic regimes. In extensional and compressional regimes, shear zones have a low angle, below 30º. While in directional or strike-slip regimes, shear zones have a high angle. Generally, the deformation that occurs in shear zones is predominantly due to simple shear.
