In Italian, caruggio or carruggio is a street typical of Ligurian historical centers. In these narrow spaces squeezed between the hills and the sea, the wealthy Genoese merchants and noble citizens had splendid residences built, where works of art were collected and kept for centuries. They are still visible inside the palaces that were converted into museums and are now open to the public. But take a step away from museums and palaces — and you find yourself in narrow crooked streets where sunlight never reaches. Their shape was defined in the 12th century when a group of families that had found their fortune in the maritime trade, built strong walls to protect the city. The streets are narrow, continuously intersecting and unexpectedly opening into smaller squares. Many such squares host ancient churches.
