Hydrangeas are simply a beautiful eye-catcher in every garden, regardless of whether you have a cottage garden or just want to create a highlight in the front garden. There are a few things to consider when pruning hydrangeas, as there are 2 pruning groups. Pruning group one includes mophead hydrangeas, lacecap hydrangeas, climbing hydrangeas, velvet hydrangeas and sedge-leaf hydrangeas. This group blooms on old wood and is only pruned in late spring. Here, only the flower heads are cut off up to the first leaf, as the new flowers are already there. Pruning group two includes snowball hydrangeas such as the Annabell variety and panicle hydrangeas such as the Phantom variety. These species bear their flowers on this year's new growth. Here, the scissors are used in February.
