In Episode 29 of Byomkesh Bakshi, “Dhokadhari”, set in Calcutta, 1965, Gangapada Choudhary meets Ashok Maity at Howrah station and offers him shelter after noticing his striking resemblance to his younger brother. He asks Ashok to stay in his house under his name and note the time whenever he sees a man in a red coat from the window. Four days later, Ashok is shot while standing at the window but survives. Byomkesh discovers that Gangapada had disguised himself with a beard and had never left Calcutta. He also learns that Naresh, Gangapada’s former senior at the iron mill, had recently been released from prison. Years earlier, Gangapada’s testimony had sent Naresh to jail in a manslaughter case, though Naresh claimed he had been framed. Byomkesh concludes that Gangapada feared Naresh’s revenge and deliberately used Ashok as a decoy. He places a newspaper advertisement for an electric furnace operator’s job in Bombay.
