Summa was a company owned by eccentric, business magnate Howard Hughes. The four‐man team forced their way into the building and, using acetylene torches, burned their way into the safes and filing cabinets that contained some of the companies most sensitive documents. A Hughes official called the CIA and informed director of Central Intelligence, William Colby that the burglars could have access to some very sensitive information Colby is reported to have relayed this information to the head of the FBI, with instructions to contact the thieves and facilitate the return of the documents.
