Among ancient medieval and Renaissance houses and narrow alleys, we encounter the oldest building in the village, the Church of San Giovanni Battista, built by the Hermit monks in the 9th century. The architectural structure is austere, rectangular in shape with a single nave. A plaque on the wall testifies to its renovation in 1930, dedicated to those who died at sea and on land. Not far away, on a narrow street, we visited the 14th-century Temple of Sant'Agostino. Built in late Gothic style, it features a gabled façade embellished with a beautiful decorated rose window. Inside, it houses a spectacular carved wooden polyptych depicting the Virgin Mary with Child and Saints, by the artist Vittore Crivelli, dating back to the late 15th century, and an altarpiece of the Madonna and Child by Vincenzo Pagani, a local painter from the 16th century. At the end of the street in Piazza Lattanzi, the view opens up to the Adriatic Sea, and we are enraptured by the sight of "the fusion of sea and sky" all the way to Mount Conero in all its grandeur (pictured, half-hidden by the mist, on the left). In the small square are two important structures: the Oratory of San Rocco and the Church of Santa Maria a Mare, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In the small square are two important structures: the Oratory of San Rocco and the Church of Santa Maria a Mare, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Church of Santa Maria a Mare is in Romanesque-Gothic style, dating back to the 12th century, and was built with blocks of squared stone and brick. It has a simple façade and a spire-topped portal. Upon entering, we immediately notice the division into three naves with cross vaults frescoed with images of the Virgin and the Theological and Cardinal Virtues, the work of Sigismondo Nardi. Many frescoes by painters from the Marche region adorn the interior, including the Madonna, the Angels, and Saint Sebastian by Paolo da Visso, the Madonna and Child, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, and Saint Paul, and works by the Salimbeni workshop of San Severino Marche dating back to the 15th century. Leaving the church, we head toward the city walls, where the Gasparri Meteorological Observatory, built in the 19th century in white travertine and in a neo-Gothic style, and the quadrangular Torre Merlata (Crenellated Tower) stand out. Walking through these alleys, breathing in the scents of lush nature, and witnessing so much history in such a small village as Torre di Palme is a unique and unforgettable experience! #marche #amarche #torredipalme #fermo #borgo #borghi #borghipiùbelliditalia #italia #italy
