HiFi Socket Interface Casting - Cornerstone Prosthetics
The HiFi socket is a revolutionary new concept in above the knee prosthetic design. It incorporates four struts that provides compression and release zones to the residual limb to provide a sense of osseostabilization that enhances walking for any amputee. It’s also a sub-ischial design which provides better comfort and better range of motion at the hip for improved walking mechanics. The HiFi socket also provides a great sense of proprioception so that as an amputee is walking they feel more connected to the ground. The way we accomplish getting the shape for the HiFi socket is we have a special casting stand. On the stand we have four adjustable paddles that help us get the desired compression zones on the limb. The compression and release zones that are desired go in-between the muscle bellies to isolate those around the limb. This helps provide this osseostabilization that gives the patient a great sense of control through the socket and really stabilizes the femur. When we’re casting the patient we put their leg in the stand, and we align the paddles to the desired compression and release zones. After aligning the paddles on the patient we ask the patient to step out of the stand so that we can confirm the paddle positions are equal distance apart. We do this to make sure there is equal level of pressure around the limb. The casting stand and paddles can be positioned, flexed or extended, to match the patient’s resting angle. While the plaster is hardening it’s important to have the patient fully load into the paddles to give a realistic sense of the load they will be experiencing inside the socket. The HiFi socket design can be incorporated with any suspension mechanism. There are no limitations. It can also be used on a variety of patients of different functional mobility levels. Whether you’re a patient who walks in the home, walks in the community, or even runs on their prosthesis they can benefit from this design. The HiFi socket is only one of our specialty above the knee amputee socket designs. If you want to see some of our other designs just check out some of our other videos.
