As soon as the thermometer rises, weather reports turn into disaster alerts: "Heatwave," "Scorching heat," "Epicenter of the heatwave"—and all this for a week of summer followed by a cool-down at the weekend. While meteorologists draw comparisons to the Sahara and the German Weather Service warns of "extreme heat stress for humans and animals," an obvious solution remains politically undesirable in Germany: air conditioning. 94 percent of all households in the USA are air-conditioned. In Germany, it's a mere 11 percent—and according to the prevailing ideology, that's how it should stay. Energy conservation takes precedence over quality of life, carbon footprint over common sense. Meanwhile, the German public broadcaster ZDF offers tips for dealing with the heat that are almost unbelievable: roll up carpets, switch off the Wi-Fi router. But the real scandal is something else entirely: German retirement and nursing homes completely lack air conditioning, and this comes at a cost of €4,000 per month out of pocket. Added to this is the failure of the infrastructure: After 30 years, the BVG (Berlin's public transport company) has put new subway trains into service, but of course, without air conditioning. Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) advises its passengers to cancel their tickets during heat waves.
