It draws boiling water from nearly 3 km deep. With a thermal capacity of 30 MW, the Ritterschoffen power plant (Bas-Rhin) is the most powerful deep geothermal site in mainland France. The plant doesn't produce electricity, but raw heat, which is delivered to a starch factory located in Beinheim, 15 km away. Geothermal energy thus avoids the use of fossil gas.
