Seeing all of Munich's sights in one day is an impossible task, but you can explore the entire historic part of the city on foot, where the main tourist attractions are concentrated. Between exploring the historic buildings and museums, you can visit Munich's famous beer halls, restaurants, and the numerous shops of the Old Town. To see all of Old Munich in one day, it's important to plan your route in advance. We offer a sample route covering all the major streets and squares of the historic center. The tour begins at Karlsplatz (also known as Stachus Square). This is the western end of Old Munich and is easily accessible by any public transport. Many Munich residents prefer this method of getting around the city to avoid traffic jams. Munich's transportation system consists of a vast network of subways, commuter trains, buses, and trams. The main landmark on the square is the Charles Gate (Karlstor), the remains of the demolished fortifications that once surrounded Old Munich. On the opposite (western) side of the square stands the neo-Baroque Palace of Justice. The center of the square is adorned with the large Stachusbrunnen fountain. From Karlsplatz, Neuhauser Strasse stretches eastward, becoming Kaufingerstrasse. Both streets are the center of the Old Town's shopping scene, boasting a wide variety of shops to suit every taste. Along this stretch of the route, you'll also encounter architectural landmarks: the Bürgersaal, the Old Academy building, the Richard Strauss Fountain, and the Michaelskirche. It's also worth stopping by the famous Augustiner Brasserie and visiting the German Museum of Hunting and Fishing. Turning onto Augustiner Strasse near the museum, you'll reach Munich's most famous cathedral. It's visible from afar: the Frauenkirche—a tall Gothic church with two towers topped with onion-shaped domes. After exploring the cathedral, return to Kaufinger Strasse, which leads to the center of Munich—Marienplatz (Platz of Our Lady). When exploring Munich and the interesting sights of the historic center, you can't miss the city's main square. The most notable building on Marienplatz is the New Town Hall, with its chiming clock and moving figures. The Old Town Hall, whose tower houses a toy museum, also remains. The Virgin Mary's Column rises in the center of the square. A little further south from Marienplatz, at the very beginning of Rindermarkt, stands St. Peter's Cathedral—Old Peter, as Munich residents call it. Further on is the large food market, Viktualienmarkt, from which it's not far to the Munich City Museum (specializing in the history of Munich). After the museum, continue a little further southwest to Sendlinger Strasse, where you'll find another important architectural landmark in Germany: the Asam Church (Asambirche). The tour of Munich's sights continues in the northern part of the Old Town. From Marienplatz, it's best to walk along Dienerstrasse to Residenzstrasse, and then to Odeonsplatz. Residenzstrasse houses the large complex of buildings that once housed the rulers of Bavaria. The architectural ensemble of Odeonsplatz includes the famous Theatinerkirche (St. Cajetan's Church). To the east of Odeonsplatz lies the Court Garden (Hofgarten). Its center is adorned with a pavilion with a fountain and an allegorical figure of Bavaria, depicted as Diana, the goddess of the hunt. In the northeastern part of the park, where the English Garden begins, stands Prince Karl's Palace. After exploring Old Munich, you can continue your journey to Königsplatz. Munich is a city of museums, covering a wide range of specialties. Near Königsplatz are the city's most important art museums: the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek, the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Glyptothek, and the Brandhorst Museum.
