Replacing "not user replaceable" APC UPS battery (BVN900M1/BVN650M1)

The APC UPS model BVN900M1 and BVN650M1 are advertised as having batteries that are not user replaceable unlike their discontinued counterparts, the BN900M and BN650M1, which have openings to easily access the batteries for replacement. The user manuals say to contact APC to have a technician replace the battery, which is prohibitively expensive.
