The area now known as Altenburger Land was settled by Slavs from the early Middle Ages. Sorbian tribes practiced agriculture and animal husbandry on treeless lands. In the mid-12th century, the Swabian-born Hohenstaufen dynasty extended their sphere of influence to these territories. Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa secured his newly acquired power by elevating his previously unfree ministeriales, the imperial ministeriales, to the rank of knights and assigning them responsibilities. They were to guide the resettlement, suppress existing Slavic influences, enforce German law, collect taxes, and protect the land from enemies. This led to the development of a network of small fortifications in the Pleißenland region during the 12th and 13th centuries. The clearing of large tracts of land, the establishment of villages, and the construction of castles to secure the newly acquired territories subsequently shaped the region's development. Posterstein Castle is one of the castles built during this period. One of Frederick Barbarossa's imperial ministeriales was named Gerhardus de Nubudiz. His name appeared in 1143 in the list of witnesses to a document issued by Conrad III. The name also appeared in later documents, albeit with varying spellings. In 1191, a document issued by Henry VI mentions Gerhardo de Nwbodicz and his mother, Mechthilde. In the confirmation of this document by the Bishop of Naumburg, both are referred to as "Mechthilde de Steinne et filio Gerhardo." This is the first documented mention of Posterstein as "vom Steinne" and simultaneously the last such mention of the Nöbdenitz ministeriales. The eponymous manor house in Nöbdenitz – a flat, moated settlement – belonged to the Posterstein estate until 1575. A promontory just two kilometers away, overlooking the Sprotte River, had apparently proven to be the more strategically advantageous fortification. _______________________ IMPRINT Daniela Bensch Email: [email protected] VAT ID No.: DE231129701 Responsible for content according to § 55 II RStV: Daniela Bensch, Leipzig Editing software: Adobe Premiere Pro Camera: Canon EOS M50 Mark II Music: YouTube Creative Tool
