On my first day in Volgograd, I visited the "Motherland Calls" monument. One of the world's largest sculptures, it was built in memory of the hundreds of thousands who lost their lives in the Battle of Stalingrad, one of the bloodiest battles of World War II. Standing approximately 85 meters tall, this giant monument symbolizes a mother holding a sword, urging her people to defend themselves. The Battle of Stalingrad, fought in 1942-1943, is considered one of the most critical turning points that changed the course of the war and continues to live on in memory as a symbol of great resistance that affected the lives of millions. The road from Volgograd to Saratov, however, evoked completely different emotions. I finally solved my internet problem in Russia and breathed a sigh of relief, but the long stretches of plains, dangerous overtaking maneuvers from oncoming vehicles, and oppressive heat made driving difficult at times. The following day, on the road to Samara, I narrowly escaped a massive storm. Watching the dark clouds that followed me in my mirrors, I raced against the rain, and luckily I was able to continue on my way before the downpour started. The short conversation I had with my Turkish brother Cafer, whom I met in traffic as I approached Samara, was one of the best moments of the day.
