Hochbegabte Musikerinnen – Die Violinistinnen Hani und Bomi Song | Reportage | SRF

Bomi Song could read at the age of one and a half, graduated from high school at 16, and then studied music in Berlin. Her younger sister, Hani, was just as talented and is now also pursuing a master's degree in music. "Reporter" met the two sisters in Munich. "I always felt like I was getting special treatment." Bomi Song recalls with mixed feelings the labels attached to the gifted child. Now 25, she astonished experts with her virtuosity on the violin and teachers with her quick grasp of concepts. She skipped three grades before graduating from the Zurich Cantonal School for Art and Sport at the age of 16. Shortly afterward, at just 17, she took the plunge and went to university in Berlin on her own. Hani, the younger of the two Song sisters, also felt uncomfortable with her talents. “I often deliberately slowed down or hid the fact that I was faster or better than the others in my class,” Hani explains. She didn’t want to be seen as a nerd and would have preferred to be like everyone else. What particularly bothered the two sisters was the prejudice that their Korean parents had pushed them to achieve top performance. “Our parents didn’t push us; we wanted to practice on our own,” they say. Reporter Nathalie Rufer has been following the sisters for thirteen years and met them in Munich, where they now live, for the “Reporter” series on child prodigies. They have remained true to playing the violin. Hani will complete her master’s degree at the University of Music and Performing Arts in a year, and Bomi has just started working in the orchestra of the National Theatre.
