Pet Sounds Unraveled | The DSS One-Step & The Two Paths to Pet Sounds
For decades, Pet Sounds was an album I admired more than I emotionally connected with. Over time, repeated listening slowly changed that relationship — and this new Definitive Sound Series One-Step led me to revisit the album once again from an entirely different perspective. In this video, I explore what I believe are two distinct listening lineages to Pet Sounds: • the original master tape lineage, represented by pressings such as the DCC mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray’s Analogue Productions edition • and the 1972 Carl and the Passions / Artisan lineage, the path that ultimately led to the new DSS One-Step Rather than declaring a single “definitive” Pet Sounds, this video examines how these different approaches reveal different emotional and sonic dimensions of Brian Wilson’s masterpiece. The new Definitive Sound Series One-Step features: • mastering and lacquer cutting by Chris Bellman • One-Step processing • VR900 premium vinyl formulation • deluxe presentation and packaging inspired by the historic 1972 lineage I also discuss: • the role of the Carl and the Passions twofer in Pet Sounds history • why the DCC remains one of my favorite presentations from the original tape lineage • the unique perspective offered by the stereo mix • and why I ultimately feel these different versions complement rather than replace one another Read the companion article here: https://www.audiophilia.com/reviews/2...
