Raising Mini Pigs: Feeding Your Mini Pig

How much should I feed my mini pig? It's one of the most common questions heard by Mazuri nutritionist and mini pig expert Dr. Nichole Huntley. In this short video, Dr. Huntley helps mini pig parents calculate the correct amount of food to keep their pets happy, healthy and long living. Mini pigs always seem hungry! Dr. Huntley's best rule of thumb is to feed mini pigs depending on their age: • For pigs younger than 4 months of age, feed them 1.5 to 3% of their body weight. • For adult animals, 4 months old and older, feed them 1 to 2% of their body weight. Dr. Huntley says it's important to use your pig's ideal bodyweight when calculating their feed volume, not what they currently weigh. For example, let's consider a 50-pound mini pig that's active, lives outside most of the time and has a healthy body condition. Dr. Huntley recommends feeding Mazuri® Mini Pig Active Adult feed. To determine the amount, multiply the pig's weight by 2%: 50 x 2% = 1 pound of feed per day. Split this amount between two feedings. Since most pet owners feed by volume, not weight, Dr. Huntley shared this conversion rate: 1 cup of mini pig pellets weighs about 150 grams or 5.3 ounces. So, a 50-pound, active mini pig would be fed about 3 cups of food per day, spread over two feeding times. The Mazuri® mini pig feed bags include a recommended feeding guide on the back of the bag to help you calculate the correct serving size.
