What is a Slope Rating in Golf

Expressed as a number typically ranging from 55 to 155, the rating uses a standard value of 113 to represent a course of average difficulty. A higher Slope Rating signifies that a course is more challenging for a bogey golfer because it features more hazards, longer carries, or complex green complexes that disproportionately impact a higher-handicap player compared to an elite golfer. Essentially, while the Course Rating measures the baseline difficulty for a scratch player, the Slope Rating adjusts that expectation to determine how many additional strokes a bogey golfer should receive to compete fairly on that specific layout.
