The 1975 Detroit Riot | 50 Years Later

Detroit’s Livernois-Fenkell Riot in 1975 stemmed from an incident where a white bar owner shot an 18-year-old black child after he thought he was breaking into cars. The victim, Obie Anthony Wynn, died from the gunshot, leaving behind a girlfriend and a daughter. The riot that ensued was mostly contained thanks to Mayor Coleman A. Young, but there was one other fatality. This led to the prosecution of the ‘Livernois 5,’ which included a member of Young Boys Incorporated. Despite making national headlines at the time, this riot has mostly been forgotten by those outside of Detroit.
