We’re crafting a matched set of bass guitars, completely from scratch AND completely from salvaged wood! We’ve showed you other build projects starting with kits and pre-made parts but in this miniseries, I’ll show you how you too can start from the absolute beginning and with a modest selection of hand tools and DIY tips, you can turn out some beautiful instruments. This episode is all about the different places and ways that you will need to do some routing in a guitar build. I’ll talk about some of the main areas that need this process as well as why you might need to approach some of it differently. First, when you look at larger routing areas, like the pickup cavities, the neck pocket, and the electronics cavity, I talk through how you can prepare those big spots with a forstner drill bit first. By doing this, you can remove the bulk of the wood material from that spot in a ‘rough’ way, then go back with the router itself to clean up the outlines of the cavity. This two-step approach will not only make the whole thing go faster, it will also greatly extend the life of your router bits!! The other approach is when you need to route out the long channels for your truss rod and in our case, the carbon fiber supporting rods. This time, I set up my long, straight guide board and take a router bit that is the exact width of the channel I want and make an initial pass with the bit extending just the tiniest way past the guard. You’ll only take off a little bit of material that pass, but by making successive passes, each time extending the bit a little more, you’ll get whatever depth you need!
