William Desmond Taylor News Story ("1986" Newsmagazine) (Aired Tues. 7/8/1986)
As someone who's long held an interest in the still-unsolved 1922 William Desmond Taylor murder mystery, it was pretty exciting finding this when sifting through a box of old Betamax tapes. Having said that, this is a pretty flawed bit of journalism, mostly relying on the conjecture-laden then-recent book "A Cast of Killers" (which I understand has since been revised, but I've only read the original book). Lots of misinformation here (particularly on Mabel Normand), but still an interesting, if slightly goofy watch. This piece aired on an episode of a short-lived NBC newsmagazine called "1986"---which I'd imagine would've become 1987, etc. had it lasted. This aired on Toledo, Ohio NBC affiliate WTVG on Tuesday, July 8, 1986.
