Loyal Sons Of Benagh @ The Ulster Tower 24/05/19
Loyal Sons Of Benagh Flute Band from Newry marching to & playing at the Ulster Tower in the Somme area in France. The Ulster Tower was one of the first memorials to be erected on the Western Front and commemorates the men of the 36th Ulster Division and all those from Ulster who served in the First World War. The Memorial was officially opened on 19th November 1921 and is a very close copy of Helen's tower which stands in the grounds of the Clandeboye Estate near Bangor in Co. Down. Many of the men of the Ulster Division trained in the estate before moving to England & then France in early 1916. The tower stands on what was the German front line during the Somme offensive which started on 1st July 1916 when over 2000 men of the 36th Ulster Division were killed and over 3000 wounded on the 1st day of the battle alone.
