Pastor Said “Date Potential”…And The Entire Panel Lost It!

One phrase changed the entire conversation. During the Dear Future Wifey panel, a pastor told the audience that if more Black women want to get married, they need to date potential. Almost immediately, several women on the panel pushed back, interpreting “date potential” as telling women to accept “struggle love” or financially unstable men. But are those actually the same thing? In this video, I explain why I believe those are two completely different ideas. Dating potential has traditionally meant two people meeting while they’re both still building their lives—growing together instead of expecting one person to arrive as a finished product. The problem is that many people hear “potential” and automatically assume it means settling for someone with no ambition, no direction, or no work ethic. That’s not what many people mean when they use the phrase. I also discuss another part of the conversation that often gets overlooked: potential applies to both people in the relationship. If neither person has reached their goals yet, then both are investing in one another’s future—not just one person carrying the other.
