Can amateur DIYers 'lay off' paint like the pro's?

'Laying off' is a technique used by professional boat painters to get a smooth mirror like finish to paint work. It's a combination of putting paint on the boat with a roller, and smoothing it off with a brush - done well it really makes the finished paint work look really good. So can us to amateur DIYers master the laying off technique and get our painted "like the pro's would"? We don't have years of experience, limited tools and no covered painting dock, so getting a professional finish is going to be hard - but lets just see how good we can get it, whilst painting canalside!
