A big part of my preparation process is to find a model player whose games embody the opening’s core ideas, and I’ve chosen Swedish GM Jonny Hector as that guiding figure. Although the Slav is often seen as slow and solid, Hector played it throughout his career with dynamism and attacking flair, changing my own perception of the opening. To highlight the opening’s strategic and dynamic sides, I walk through two of his games: one positional masterpiece against Cifuentes (1992) centered around the fight for the c-file, and one razor-sharp counter-gambit win against Timman (2007) that reveals just how dangerous the Slav can be in the right hands. Throughout the video, I ask viewers to pause and think like Hector, identifying instructive moments that illustrate recurring plans, strategic pressure, and long-term positional goals. From smart development choices and file domination to dynamic pawn breaks and devastating attacks, Hector’s games serve as a rich training ground for aspiring Slav players. This video is part of the upcoming course’s “Model Games” chapter, which will explore instructive examples played by strong practitioners like Hector. If you know other beautiful or instructive Slav games, I’d love to hear from you!
