The latest installment in the popular FPS (First-Person Shooter) series 'Call of Duty,' which has sold over 500 million copies worldwide, has returned with the Korean Peninsula as its setting. Activision released a teaser video for 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4' on the 28th (local time) and announced that the game will be released on October 23. The released video begins with a scene in which South Korean and U.S. soldiers are patrolling downtown Seoul when a sudden power outage triggers an enemy surprise attack. The video then depicts combat involving armored vehicles and tanks in downtown Seoul, modeled after Sungnyemun Gate, as well as a unit presumed to be the South Korean Marine Corps landing on the coast via hovercraft. The game's protagonist is 'Private Park,' and the story is presumed to center on an all-out war between North and South Korea, involving the clash of various factions. Through an interview on the official Xbox channel, the development team revealed the reasons for choosing Korea as the main setting and the process of recreating Korean culture. The production team explained, "We imagined what would happen if North Korea invaded South Korea, given the large number of U.S. troops stationed there." They also stated, "Because North and South Korea have a history of conflict both in the past and present, we were able to create a more authentic story." The production team explained that some of the South Korean soldier characters featured in the teaser video were designed as conscripts, and that the cultural clashes and cooperation processes experienced by U.S. soldiers in Korea were also included as key elements. The production team emphasized that they actively incorporated feedback from Korean-American developers to realistically portray the South Korean military and culture. They stated that they put great effort into the Korean dialogue, saying, "We assumed that if there were two South Korean soldiers, they would naturally converse in Korean." They also explained that they operated a separate internal channel to review Korean culture, stating, "We even checked the placement of convenience store products." Online communities also praised the logo design, which utilized the Korean character '사' (sa) instead of the number 4, and the appearance of South Korean military characters wearing the Taegeukgi (South Korean flag). Domestic users showed great interest, commenting, "I can't believe Hangul is in the Modern Warfare logo," and "It's refreshing to see the Korean military featured prominently." Upon hearing the news that war is breaking out on the Korean Peninsula, overseas users reacted enthusiastically, saying, "Let's go defend Seoul." This marks the first time in 12 years, since the release of 'Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare' in 2014, that Korea has appeared as a playable setting in the Call of Duty series.
