Laughter in Court as Babu Owino Schools Cyber Expert in Nuru Okanga’s Trial

A cyber forensic expert’s report in the case against political commentator Nuru Okanga was severely weakened today after a blistering cross-examination by defence lawyer Hon. Babu Owino. Cyber and digital forensic analyst Juma Mwajirani came under intense scrutiny as Babu methodically poked holes in both his qualifications and his conclusions. The defence questioned the credibility of Mwajirani’s certification, pointing out that the institution he cited does not issue forensic analyst credentials. Babu further discredited the report by highlighting glaring inconsistencies—among them, the use of a 2023 reference letter to support an investigation conducted in 2024. He criticised the document as “incorrect” and scientifically unreliable. Mwajirani was also pressed on his lack of internationally recognised certification, undermining his authority to conduct a digital forensic analysis of this scale. The defence raised a central question: how could the analyst conclusively link Okanga to the disputed social media accounts, SIM card, or videos without producing concrete digital evidence? At one point, Babu even corrected Mwajirani’s pronunciation of “Cellebrite,” further illustrating the analyst’s shaky command of his tools and methods. By the end of the heated exchange, Mwajirani struggled to defend his own findings, and Babu declared that the forensic report could not withstand even basic scrutiny.
