Why you should play the Trails of Cold Steel series (from a newcomer)

One of the most underrated JRPGs these days is The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel series. Combining the combat system of Grandia with the social dating sim, social link elements of Persona, and some great music, the game is quickly gaining a new fanbase. Including myself in this new fanbase. After beating Persona 5 Royal and Final Fantasy VII Remake, I stumbled upon the Trails of Cold Steel series by accident. I was just looking for “JRPGs like Persona,” and saw many people recommending this JRPG series. And I’m glad these JRPG fans did, because I soon became a hardcore fan of the series, playing all of the games in the larger Legend of Heroes series after the Trails arc. Originally released on the PS3 and PS Vita in 2015 in the West, the game’s PC and PS4 re-releases opened the series up to a new wave of players. The 2019 PS4 release especially gave the series new hype and exposure. Let’s see why this series is a great JRPG series and why it’s criminally underrated.
