Elsie Tanner leaves Coronation Street (4 January 1984)

The legend, the icon, the best. 35 years ago, Pat Phoenix made her final appearance as Elsie Tanner in Coronation Street. A touching and fitting end for the character who helped to change the face of British television and define the soap opera genre. The end of an era. Very sadly, two years later, Pat Phoenix sadly died of lung cancer aged 62. I like to think she would've made more appearances as Elsie if she had lived. Copyright of ITVplc and Granada.
