TALON en visite d'inspection sur le chantier du Palais Royal de Nikki et de l’Arène de la Gaani
On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, President Patrice Talon visited Nikki for a site visit to the ongoing construction of the Royal Palace and the arena dedicated to the famous Gaani festival. This visit by the Head of State demonstrates the importance given to this project, which holds significant historical and cultural value for Benin. Accompanied by Ministers José Tonato (Minister of Living Environment), Jean-Michel Abimbola (Minister of Tourism and Culture), Aurélie Adam Soule Zoumarou (Minister of Digital Affairs), Minister-Advisor Mariam Djaouga (née Sacca), Mr. Sindé Chekete (Director General of Benin Tourism), the Prefect of Borgou, the Mayor of Nikki, technicians, and many others, President Talon took the time to inspect the entire construction site. He was able to assess the progress of the work while raising certain quality requirements. The Head of State notably formulated clear recommendations to ensure the delivery of a set of infrastructure projects that meet the expected technical and architectural standards. The construction of the Royal Palace of Nikki, along with that of the Gaani Arena, is part of a broader effort to promote Benin's cultural heritage. By restoring this important site in the history of the Baatonu people, the government intends to restore its central role in the country's cultural and ceremonial life. During this visit, the President of the Republic also traveled along several stages of the "King's Route," the ritual itinerary followed during the Gaani celebration. This on-site experience allowed for a better understanding of the necessary improvements to enhance the solemnity and smooth flow of the festivities. The visit concluded with a private meeting between President Talon and His Majesty Séro Torou, King of Nikki. The discussions between the two leaders focused on cultural issues and local development needs related to the enhancement of the royal site and its surroundings. Following this meeting, President Talon announced the imminent launch of new sanitation and development projects in the city of Nikki. These initiatives aim to strengthen the appeal of the Gaani festival, which is destined to become a major international event and a significant driver of cultural tourism in Benin.
